No One Is Always Right!

Be yielding, not rigid. This will help resolve conflicts and improve your relationships." For some of us, this is a big one. When we grew up in traumatic backgrounds, which statistically speaking many if not most of us did, being right wasn't just about being a pain in the ass, it was a coping mechanism and a survival technique. But what does it mean to be right? What is the cost of being right? It means someone or something else has to be wrong, and nobody really likes or appreciates how that feels. There are so very few things in life that are black and white, truly right or wrong. When I am teaching my classes, I try like hell to avoid using the words "right" or "wrong." I prefer the phrases "more or less effective." We don't have to always be right. There really isn't anything to gain from that energy at this point in our lives. We can live and let live, agree to disagree. Things do not have to be so set in stone. There is always much more grey area in our lives than there is black and white. If you are someone who always feels the need to be right, perhaps even seeks external validation that way, ask yourself why. Be willing to honestly assess what it is that you have to gain from that particular pattern. Be willing to honestly assess if it is something that you can begin to soften your grip on and let go. You do not have to attend every fight that you are invited to. You do not have to pick up your proverbial sword just because someone starts swinging at you with theirs. You get to decide which hills you really choose to die on on (proverbially speaking). Would you rather be right or would you rather be alone? Sometimes the choice really is just that simple.
